Making Books Sing’s Education Programs are fun-filled, engaging pathways to finding the joy, imagination and learning that transpire when reading, seeing theatre and making theatre.
Our approach, whether in our programs for 4-year-olds or 40-year-olds, is on your feet, not in your seat. As one of our third graders noted, “I don’t like to read because I can’t jump around when I’m reading.”
In the hands of Making Books Sing’s experienced, nurturing teaching artists, she can read a passage, then create music or movement to express a character’s emotions. She can use the actor’s tools – imagination, body and voice – to act out the passage, making inferences along the way. She can improvise a scene with her peers, then document and revise the dialogue as a group. This child will also blossom through risk-taking, critical thinking, problem-solving and collaborating. She will emerge more literate about books, theatre, herself, her peers and the world around her.
We also help adults and teens connect with their own voices as theatre and literary artists – whether as a writer, reader, theatergoer or theatremaker. These gifts can translate to the children in their lives.
Schools and Community Organizations can design modified programs for the schoolday, afterschool or summer school.
For Early Childhood
SKIP: Site-Specific, Kids Interactive Plays is designed especially for emergent readers. We create opportunities for children to do what they do best – dramatic play and structured theatre games flavored with music, movement and visual art – to build their early reading comprehension and writing skills. This program is ideal for PreK – 1st grade.
For Elementary and Middle School
Literature at Play students are immersed in the study of contemporary literature for children and youth through age-appropriate creative play, drama games, improvisation, movement, playwriting and songwriting.
It Starts with a Story connects students to a range of theatre artists to explore text from the unique, creative perspective of an actor, choreographer, director, composer, lyricist or designer.
For High Schools and Higher Education
Our newest education program passes along the power of theater-in-education to our next generation of aspiring educators and theater artists.
