Pura Belpré was the first Latina librarian in the New York Public Library system. In this production, a bilingual storyteller teaches children about Pura’s legacy, Puerto Rican folklore and the library’s important role in the community.
This 45-minute interactive educational production presents in schools, libraries or community centers and is told through music, puppetry and storytelling.
Educational Goals:
To introduce students to:
·Immigration and cultural identity
·Folktales and the art of traditional storytelling
·The benefits of community and shared public spaces
Target Audience:
K-2nd grade
Residency:
A Literature at Play residency, in which a class-chosen book with a related theme is adapted into a play, is also available to schools who wish to extend the program. A recommended book list and Resource Guide will be provided to teachers.

$400 per performance (maxium 3 classes per performance—85 participants total)
